Cabo Espichel is a place where dramatic landscapes meet an almost spiritual silence. Located in the municipality of Sesimbra, on Portugal’s southwest coast, the cape is a sanctuary where raw nature intersects with history, religion, and even prehistory. It is a destination that surprises anyone looking for much more than just a scenic view.
If you are a fan of towering cliffs, coastal trails, ancient legends, and unforgettable sunsets, Cabo Espichel will win you over. In this post, we share everything you need to know before visiting this magical spot.
We visited the cape in August 2021, at sunset, and the experience was nothing short of magical.

What to see and do at Cabo Espichel
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Cabo Espichel
Standing on a plateau that ends in cliffs overlooking the sea, this sanctuary combines the imposing beauty of architecture with the strength of popular devotion. The complex includes the church, guesthouses, the Hermitage of the Memory Chapel, and the ruins of the old Opera House. It is a place steeped in history and spirituality, framed by breathtaking scenery.
- Access to the premises: always open
- Church opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–13:30 and 14:30–17:00
Cabo Espichel Lighthouse
Built in 1790, the Cabo Espichel Lighthouse is one of the oldest in Portugal and still guides sailors today. Although interior visits are not always available, the exterior is impressive and the surrounding views are stunning.
- Visiting hours: Wednesdays, 14:00–17:00 (summer) and 13:30–16:30 (winter)

Dinosaur footprints
Yes, you read that right: Cabo Espichel is home to fossilised dinosaur tracks! You can find them in places such as:
- Lagosteiros site
- Avelino Quarry, just a short drive away
Coastal trails and viewpoints
The landscape around the cape is perfect for hiking. Several marked trails lead to viewpoints where you can admire the vast ocean in total silence. A true highlight here is the sunset, which is absolutely epic.
Best time to visit
While Cabo Espichel is accessible year-round, the best months are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these seasons, hiking conditions are ideal, with less wind than in winter and without the intense heat of summer.
If you prefer quieter surroundings, visit on weekdays. Weekends, especially in summer, tend to attract more visitors.

How to get to Cabo Espichel
The most convenient way is by car. From Lisbon, the drive takes around 50 minutes via the A2, followed by the N379 towards Sesimbra. The cape is well signposted, and free parking is available onsite.
Why visit Cabo Espichel
Because it is one of those rare places where time seems to stand still. The sea, the wind, the layers of history, and the unique energy you feel here make Cabo Espichel one of the best-kept secrets of the Portuguese coast. It is the perfect getaway for those who want to escape the crowds, reconnect with nature, and perhaps with themselves as well.
