What to see and do at Cabo Espichel
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Cabo Espichel
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel is the heart of the area. Built on a dramatic cliff plateau, this 18th-century complex includes:
- The church
- Pilgrim lodgings (former guesthouses)
- The Ermida da Memória (Memory Chapel)
- Ruins of an old opera house
The site combines religious history with stunning coastal views, creating a unique and almost mystical atmosphere.

- Church opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–13:30 and 14:30–17:00
Cabo Espichel Lighthouse
Built in 1790, the Cabo Espichel Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in Portugal. It still operates today, guiding ships along this rugged coastline.
Even if you can’t go inside, the surrounding viewpoints are absolutely worth the visit.
- Visiting hours: Wednesdays, 14:00–17:00 (summer) and 13:30–16:30 (winter)
Dinosaur Footprints
One of the most unique things about Cabo Espichel is its fossilised dinosaur footprints, visible along the cliffs. You can find them at:
- Lagosteiros site (main location)
- Pedreira do Avelino (Avelino Quarry), a short drive away
This makes Cabo Espichel not only scenic but also an important site for paleontology in Portugal.
Coastal trails and viewpoints
Cabo Espichel is a paradise for hiking lovers. Several trails run along the cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Highlights include dramatic cliffside paths, quiet viewpoints with almost no crowds, and one of the best sunset spots in Portugal.
Be careful near cliff edges, especially on windy days.
Best Time to Visit Cabo Espichel
While Cabo Espichel is accessible year-round, the best months are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these seasons, hiking conditions are ideal, with less wind than in winter and without the intense heat of summer.
If you prefer quieter surroundings, visit on weekdays. Weekends, especially in summer, tend to attract more visitors.
How to Get to Cabo Espichel from Lisbon
The easiest way to reach Cabo Espichel is by car.
- Distance from Lisbon: ~40 km
- Driving time: ~50 minutes
- Route: A2 motorway + N379 towards Sesimbra
There is free parking available near the sanctuary.
Public transport options are limited, so driving is highly recommended.
