If you are planning to visit Lisbon and are looking for something original, the Pilar 7 Experience of the 25 de Abril Bridge is an unmissable attraction. Opened in 2017, this panoramic viewpoint combines history, architecture and a unique perspective over the Portuguese capital.
Here we will share how our visit went and everything you need to know to plan your own experience.

What is the Pilar 7 Bridge Experience?
Located at Pilar 7 of the 25 de Abril Bridge, this cultural and tourist venue offers a distinctive perspective of one of the country’s most iconic landmarks. In addition to the glass viewpoint, the visit includes immersive experiences, multimedia exhibitions and sensory rooms telling the story of this extraordinary construction.
The bridge itself was inaugurated in 1966, originally called Ponte Salazar, and in 1974 it was renamed in honour of the Carnation Revolution. Inspired by San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, it remains one of the largest suspension bridges in the world. At Pilar 7, where the suspension cables are secured, this interpretative centre was installed – and it really is worth a visit.
How to get there
The Pilar 7 Experience is located on Avenida da Índia, in the Alcântara district of Lisbon.
What is the visit like?
- Modern design: as you approach the viewpoint, the modern architecture stands out, dominated by white and grey tones.
- Entrance and security: tickets are purchased in a bright, modern entrance hall and security includes a metal detector, much like an airport.
- Workers’ Room: the first sensory experience pays tribute to everyone involved in building the bridge. Here you can hear the sounds of construction and watch an immersive 360º video recounting the bridge’s history.
- Steel cables: a rare chance to see the suspension cables of the 25 de Abril Bridge up close – their colossal size only becomes apparent when you find yourself just a metre away.
- Mirror Room: a mirrored floor that creates the illusion of depth. A unique experience, although it may be intense for those with vertigo.
- Panoramic lift: this elevator takes visitors up to the top of the viewpoint, where you can stay for around 10 minutes. The viewpoint itself is the highlight of the visit, offering breathtaking panoramic views over Lisbon, the River Tagus and the opposite bank. Part of the floor has a glass section, adding an extra thrill to the experience. On the day of our visit, we were lucky enough to have the entire space to ourselves.
