Visit Sistelo: The Portuguese Tibet and Stunning Village in Peneda-Gerês National Park

In the north of Portugal lies a small village called Sistelo, which has earned the nickname “the Portuguese Tibet”. We visited this charming spot in June 2018 and, in this post, we’ll share our experience and give you tips for your own visit.

Located in the heart of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, the road to Sistelo is lined with breathtaking natural scenery. The approach to the village is unmistakable, with its characteristic terraced fields, the reason behind its popular nickname, the Portuguese Tibet. These terraces are the result of human interaction with nature, as local farmers shaped the hillsides over time to overcome the steep slopes and increase cultivable land.

What makes Sistelo special

Sistelo stands out for its unique cultural landscape and its warm, authentic Minho village atmosphere.

  • Terraced landscapes – Step-like hillsides created by centuries of farming, offering spectacular views in all seasons.
  • Authentic village life – Granite houses, traditional granaries and narrow streets that preserve the Minho heritage.
  • National heritage – In 2017, Sistelo was declared a National Monument thanks to its remarkable cultural landscape.
  • Nature at its best – The River Vez, lush mountains and exceptional hiking opportunities make it a perfect destination for nature lovers.

Sistelo Portugal

Though very small, Sistelo feels perfectly in tune with its surroundings. It has just one restaurant, a small castle (closed when we visited), a church, and the village’s famous granaries. From all these places, pure nature is always in sight.

The trails of Sistelo

Sistelo is a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts, with routes that delight both families and adventurers. The most famous is the Passadiços Trail (PR25), a 2 km path along the banks of the River Vez, perfect for enjoying the scenery and the river’s refreshing waters. We arrived a little late in the day and, with the heat setting in, decided to leave it for another time. Still, here’s a tip: although there’s some shade, it’s best to do this trail early in the morning, when the temperature is more pleasant and the surroundings are quieter.

Other trails include:

  • Ecovia do Vez – a much longer option, stretching up to 32 km, suited to those looking for more of a challenge either on foot or by bike. It includes the Passadiços Trail and other natural highlights and can be done in stages.
  • Brandas do Sistelo Trail (PR14) – a 9 km circular route that climbs into the mountain pastures, passing through fabulous viewpoints and sweeping landscapes. Moderate difficulty.
  • Terraces Trail (PR24) – a 5 km easy walk showcasing the famous terraces that gave Sistelo its National Monument status.
  • Bridges Trail (PR19) – a short, easy circular walk of less than 1 km, ideal for families, with picnic areas and swimming spots along the River Vez.

Estrica Viewpoint

Just a few kilometres from the village is the Estrica Viewpoint, one of the best places to take in the grandeur of Sistelo’s landscape. Along the way, you’ll often come across cows grazing freely, completely at ease with visitors passing by.
